MasterCard Adds In-App Payments to MasterPass Mobile Platform

MasterCard reports it is adding in-app payment functionality to its MasterPass mobile platform. MasterPass allows consumers to store payment data in their devices and buy items with a tap on the display, and it supports a welter of payment methods that include near field communication, quick response codes, and tags. “We’re enabling consumers to make payments at checkout counters, from a mobile phone, laptop or even at a turnstile—wherever they happen to be,” says Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer at MasterCard. He also notes that MasterPass in-app payments make it unnecessary to store payment card credentials across various mobile apps, which augments security.
